Pat Cummins Set to Play a Key Part in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of taking part.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, aside from the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in four years.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
